James has played the bagpipes since 1980.  He is passionate about developing young pipers but works with beginners/intermediates of any age: from 8 to 80 - some younger and some older as well.

James holds the Scottish Qualifications Authority Level 6 Awards in Scottish Bagpipe Solo Performance and Theory.

His competition successes include:

  • Winner Grade 2 CLASP Pibroch at the World Solo Championships 2020

  • Winner amateur Pibroch at the Corby Highland Games 2018

  • First place CLASP Grade 2 Pibroch at the Scottish Piping Society of London’s annual competition 2016

  • Second place at the CLASP Grade 2 World Solo Championships 2016

  • First place CLASP Grade 2 Pibroch at the Army School of Piping Competition in 2015

  • Winner of the Alan Gilmour Quaich and Black Watch trophies at the Royal Scottish Piper’s Society’s Annual Competition in 2015.
